I am not a big social media person in my opinion. With very little friends/followers I think I am on the unpopular side. However, I find social media great to receive breaking news around the world and community. Being a sports fan, I can get instant scores and updates on athletes. I do agree that social media can be a great tool to communicate to others. A friend of mine is a professor at Solano Community College and he uses Facebook to provide class information and opportunities for extra credit assignments to his students. He understands that he is dealing with millennials and they are glued to their devices. Social medial is one of his strategies to adapt to his student's learning. My favorite strategy of his is the response of the students helping for fundraisers such as coat drive, canned foods, and donations for the homeless. If I was to come across an inappropriate post made by one of my students outside of the school I would probably approach it like the Assistant Superintendent in the article. I would reach out to my department head or assistant principal about the matter. The parents would also be inform either by me to administration just to better support the student in their learning process. I would not response back to the post because I wouldn't want to offend him or her. My goal is to help with teaching lesson for the student and bring awareness of the pro's and con's of social media.

It is so important to teach our students the value of not only being respectful when speaking/acting, but also on social media. It is so hard for young teenagers to understand how what is "posted" just can't be deleted. I agree that it os important to have administration step in when necessary.

I don't see myself as a social media user as well but I do see how it could be useful for staying updated on the important issues. It is great that your friend has found a way to use Facebook to get students motivated to help in the community. Maybe you could do a fitness challenge for your students using some type of social media. Just an idea.

Although I do not consider myself a social media user, i recently created my first social media Twitter account to fulfill the requirement of this class. My friends have even offered to open a social media account on my behalf. As this class progresses, my goal is to be able to develop/communicate with other educators via social media sites to expand my knowledge outside of my comfort zone.

I like your example of the SCC professor: he's going to where the students are today, "glued to their devices." We have to find a way to reach students where they are in order to teach them. I'm not going to win the argument that they are better off going screen-free; that train has passed.
