What is 21st century learning in physical education? In an article from the US News, a P.E. teacher from San Rafael stated, "We're trying to introduce students to things that they can do that are outside of competitive sports,". These students are introduced adventure-style classes such as sailing, rock climbing, and hiking. She and her colleagues witness students have anxiety when it comes to competitive sports like basketball and soccer. There are many ways to be creative as long there are the resources. Another school from West Virginia provides games for students. They called it the "exergaming room" which includes an Xbox Kinect, ping-pong table, and a carnival basketball hoop. They want students to just move. The studies have shown that students who works out in the exergaming room becomes more active, competitive, and social.
As I am learning new ways to incorporate technology in physical education in terms of using the 4C's, it has given me a different view point on creating my lesson plans. From the TeachingChannel, a teacher used a formative assessment by have student do a Twitter-style exit slip. She gave students specific instructions, students must use 140 characters or less. Characters are letter, space and punctuations. This was a way for her to find out quickly what students have learned without reading a whole paragraph. I have thought about using more google forms feedback in P.E. asking students how they feel, what can be more useful, etc. Many students are involve in social media and some may be new to it, therefore I may utilize technology in that form to promote 21st century learning.

An, I love the new ways physical education instructors are getting the kids to move. I agree, sometimes those sports can get very competitive and the kids stress out a lot. We forget the true value of being a team mate. Sailing, hiking, and rock climbing can help the kids develop and exercise the 4C's. I love the idea of using an exit slip on the way out as a quick assessment. The technology video I found was about the same thing. A teacher in middle school, Joshua Kwon uses an app he created to gather data. All students pretty much have a smart phone, so they just log on to the app and answer the question on their device. The teacher then gets the data organized in seconds! I'm sure you can find something out there than can work for you and your students. Thank you for sharing I

An, I visited a really interesting school in Finland that had a special focus on physical education. They had just gotten a grant to buy a bunch of fitbit-like devices and have been collecting data from students, individually and as classes to track heart rate and other goodies. Sometimes they will review data after the activity to see which activity was best for a certain level of exercise. They are also measuring sleep hours and discussing how getting enough sleep is really important for students. It was really cool! I can share the info. Is it time to write a grant?

As someone who always competitive sports growing up, that's what I thought was the purpose working out and staying in shape. I think it is awesome that you are exposing kids to fitness and sports that are non competitive and just fun. I think that will ultimately lead to a healthy lifestyle. I like the twitter Idea for an exit ticket. This may force me join Social media, I have been resistant, but ideas like this may break me.
